STATISTICS WEEK

2019

Events:

1. Statistical taboo [ 15.10.19 ]

Statistics Week, 2019 started with a bang on 15th October'19. One of the first events was the game of Statistical Taboo organized by our zealous volunteers. The activity, held in front of Nescafe, saw the students channeling their charades skills and theatrics. The event was a combined effort of the Statistics Department’s core teams. A surprisingly large number of students from various departments of LSR turned up for the event. In fact, even the statistics-related terms like ‘Moments’, 'Attributes’, ‘Range’, ‘Sampling’, ‘Data’ etc., did not deter the non-statisticians from
winning often and taking away the prize (the beloved Chocostick). Overall, Statistical Taboo proved to be a remarkable opening for the first Statistics Week ever in LSR.

2. Photography exhibition [ 15.10.19 ]

On 15th October, 2019, the Department of Statistics, LSR officially inaugurated Statistics Week with a photography exhibition. The theme was ‘Shapes’ and gave the budding photographers an opportunity to unleash their full potential while capturing the mesmerizing symmetry and geometry around them.Participants from various colleges had sent in their entries, and one couldn't simply pass by before taking a moment to appreciate the pictures’ beauty. From abstract to real world observations, each photograph had its own story to tell. All the participants had beautifully
captured their perspectives of the views in front of them. While some complex photographs needed some time for interpretation, the simpler ones also managed to delight the viewers. Three winners were declared on the basis of their understanding and portrayal of the central theme. Nikulansh Kapoor from Delhi College of Arts and Commerce bagged the first position, followed by Ashish Solanki of Sri Venkateshwara College in second place and Nyxa Kataria of LSR in third place. All in all, the Photography Exhibition was a successful opening event for the Statistics Week.

3. Statistical Relay [ 18.10.19]

To provide relief from the chaos and mundane schedule of classes, the Department of Statistics celebrated its first ever Statistics Week from 14th October to 18th October, 2019. The event was organized to celebrate World Statistics Day, which falls on the 20th of October. A Statistical Relay was one of the many fascinating events
organized, which was like an ordinary relay, spiced up with an exciting twist. Unlike in a usual relay race, the “baton" here was a riddle or a puzzle related to statistics. The game was organized and conducted in front of the Nescafe, a popular college spot. The turn-out was huge; several students from different departments enthusiastically participated in it. Each team consisted of 2 members wherein the subsequent team member would run only when the preceding member solves the statistics based riddle. The team that took the least time to answer the riddles won
the game. Most students found the game ‘unique’ and ‘exciting’. The Statistics Department truly did a remarkable job in smoothly coordinating the event.

4. Let The Memes Begin

The Department of Statistics organised ‘Statistics Week’ from 14th October to 18th October, 2019. As part of the celebrations, the department organised ‘Let The Memes Begin,’ an online meme-making competition where students from all departments, years and colleges were free to show-off their meme-making skills. The game started
with a bang, with people sending in their hilarious and witty memes, and the entries didn’t stop coming for the entire week. The winners (or memelords, as they should be rightly called) were announced on the department’s social media handles. The winners for the first image released were Ishika, Namita and Sonam, all from the Department of Statistics, bagging the first, second and third positions respectively. The winners for the second image released were Tanya, Shivangi and Angela, also from the Department of Statistics. The winners were given what every teenager is
after these days- a social media shout-out! Not only did the game provide some respite from the stress of internal assignments and tests for all the students, but also filled our sleep deprived bodies with some joy and laughter.
